In the unhinged tradition of Arab on Radar & Chinese Stars, Doomsday Student caterwauls like four refrigerators dropped down an elevator shaft. As drums push the music forward, spiraling guitars & crazed singing use the tools of rock to dismantle rock, to make an alarm of rock, to make simultaneously songs with hooks & riffs & all that shit & also these little splitting-off universes of paranoia & hysteria & the ecstasy only exploding people truly feel.
When I listen to A Walk Through Hysteria Park on headphones in public I find myself laughing in that way that makes people cross the street away from me, that makes my spine feel made of broken bottles & soaked band aids. And I am better this way. I am more awake, more able to be in the terror & jaggedness & joy of what it is to be. Doomsday Student is a wake up call to anyone who thinks the world merely works.

Mark Fisher van Skin Graft heeft een reputatie hoog te houden. Net als we denken dat de muziek van de bands die hij tekent, niet meer gekker zal worden, bewijst hij het tegendeel. We hadden het kunnen denken natuurlijk, als het gaat om nieuw werk van Doomsday Student en Child Abuse. Providence, Richmond is de thuisbasis van Doomsday Student, dat is voortgesproten uit een stel andere belangrijke bands. Eric Paul (<b>Arab On Radar</b>, <b>The Chinese Stars</b>), Stephen Mattos (Arab On Radar, <b>Athletic Automaton</b>, <b>Chrome Jackson</b>), Craig Kureck (Arab On Radar, The Chinese Stars) en Paul Vieira (The Chinese Stars) vormen de band, en meer hoeven wij niet te weten. 'Walk Through Hysteria Park' is al net zo gestoord als het hemelse werk van Arab On Radar. Tegendraads, meer hoekjes af dan we kunnen tellen, drums die ratelen, gitaren die de andere kant op gaan en dan die compleet losgeslagen zang. Negen nummers in 23 minuten, meer kan een mens toch niet aan. En dan hebben we Child Abuse nog niet gehad. Het New Yorkse trio bestaat tien jaar en besloot zijn derde langspeler nog gekker te doen klinken dan de voorgangers. Zeven stukken in iets meer dan een half uur waarin grindcore, freejazz, death metal, noise, freak- en progrock door de mangel worden gehaald. Soms alle genres tegelijk, soms fragmentarisch aan elkaar geplakt, is dit album quasi onnavolgbaar. Chaotisch en spastisch dansbaar tegelijk, tot het trio besluit de keyboards de overhand te geven op het tweede deel van de plaat en net zo bombastisch gaat klinken als latere <b>Guapo</b>. Child Abuse is gestoord, geflipt en gaat nog veel verder in de overtreffende trap van de totale gekte.
