Boston's Ho-Ag turns in its most varied effort with its third full-length CD, Doctor Cowboy. The band's core sound is still rooted in the punk, new wave, and metal sounds of the '70s and early '80s, but increasing musical sophistication leads to more involved arrangements, with slower tempos on occasion and more of an emphasis on the imagistic lyrics. New members Kristina Johnson on guitar and Ryan Brown on bass add considerably to the group's chops, with Johnson even pitching in on vocals on 'Drawing the Boundaries of the Night' and Brown not only anchoring the sound but also acting as the lead instrumentalist on occasion. Tyler Derryberry continues to add spacey electronic effects, and the band retains an affection for science fiction soundtrack elements. It's all in support of leader Matt Parish, whose voice cuts through no matter what music surrounds it, and even when the vocals have been filtered and processed for an alien effect. There's still plenty of speedy hard rock on Doctor Cowboy, but Ho-Ag is evolving into a more mature outfit here.

Un groupe de Punk chez Mandaï Distribution ? Et bien oui ! Le groupe de Boston, HO-AG sort son troisième album et s’inscrit bien dans un style Punk tout en gardant bien entendu une forme de Noise en arrière fond. Le groupe s’aventure même dans quelques attaques bien Metal mais évidemment c’est la sophistication qui prime. Quoique HO-AG, afin de mériter son étiquette Punk, n’hésite pas à plomber certains passages, de rythmes primaires.
Les influences sont à rechercher dans les sonorités des 70’s et des 80’s. C’est ainsi que la musique de HO-AG prend aussi parfois des allures de Science-Fiction, au détour d’une accroche de guitare ou de nappes électroniques ou bien encore d’une multiplication des chants.
Par conséquent, le Punk de HO-AG est aussi par moments, décalé. Dans ce jeu d’alternances entre tempos accélérés et bidouillages spatiaux ou Noisy, j’ai même failli m’attendre à voir surgir un PLASTIC BERTRAND en guest. Rien à avoir donc avec le Punk à consonance celtique du voisin de pallier DROPKICK MURPHYS… mais Doctor Cowboy est frais et parmi ses prétextes à divagations, le Punk de HO-AG a conservé une énergie originelle et primale.
