Description

'Remain Obscure' is the fifth studio album in thirty three years by legendary NewYork underground band The Van Pelt.Darlings of the 1990s for those who prefer clandestine meetups in forgotten mill townsto floor thumping hedonistic raves; a park bench with a physical newspaper to adoom scroll; an uncomfortable and incomplete idea to the topic of the day — yeah,The Van Pelt have never been for everyone. Even those who adore them don't playthem every day. Their albums are for select moments for a select niche of weirdos. But within that narrow frame, they are an unequivocal essential. That hasn't stopped them from inspiring legions of bands though — all of which havegone on to much more fame than the brick layers themselves, naturally. Do theycare? The obscurity has allowed them to be themselves and nothing more for over30 years. The legends swirled that they rejected 16 major labels and a $2 million dollaroffer when they were just getting started. Do they regret it? They're still here whilemajor label has-beens are relegated to the dust bins. Most of the 11 songs on Remain Obscure were written while the band was writingtheir previous studio album, Artisans & Merchants, but the songs on Remain Obscuremove beyond the standard guitar/bass/drums outfit they've created within sinceinception. These songs rely on piano, synth, chants, and toy instruments as much asthey do traditional instrumentation, hence it took them longer to figure out how torecord them. Add to that that Chris Leo is now singing as much as he is talking andthat the drummer — the drummer — is now a major songwriter, and it's clear theyare truly doing everything they can to remain obscure. That said, if you are the type to find a hit on this album, please don't sing it out fromon high. Place your information in a manilla envelope and pass it under the bar to afriend you trust. Shhhhhh.
