The Ed Palermo Big Band has been in existence for 30 years and many of the musicians in the 18 piece ensemble have been with him for decades and decades! Since the early 90s, Ed Palermo has earned an avid international following with his brilliantly executed, reverently irreverent arrangements of FRANK ZAPPA's tempestuous and wildly inventive music as found on previous, best-selling releases on Cuneiform. On this release, the greatly inventive arrangements of Zappa are heard, but also heard are works by TODD RUNDGREN, another very inventive rock composer with a hard-core fan base. Would anyone else think of putting these two radically different (but both radically great) composers together? Certainly no one else would be able to make it work like it does here, with the band delivering creatively orchestrated large ensemble versions of a surprising mix of songs that all somehow all do work together. The EPBB's last release, 'The Great Un-American Songbook', garnered features and glowing reviews from *every* US jazz magazine. This release, with its program of greatly inventive versions of tunes by two distinctive, much-loved American rock composers has has huge cross-over potential to an audience that isn't primarily a jazz audience.
