The Ed Palermo Big Band has been in existence for 30 years and many of the musicians in the 18 piece ensemble have been with him for decades and decades! Since the early 90s, Ed Palermo has earned an avid international following with his brilliantly executed, reverently irreverent arrangements of FRANK ZAPPA's tempestuous and wildly inventive music as found on previous, best-selling releases on Cuneiform.
On this release, the greatly inventive arrangements of Zappa are heard, but also heard are works by TODD RUNDGREN, another very inventive rock composer with a hard-core fan base. Would anyone else think of putting these two radically different (but both radically great) composers together? Certainly no one else would be able to make it work like it does here, with the band delivering creatively orchestrated large ensemble versions of a surprising mix of songs that all somehow all do work together.
The EPBB's last release, 'The Great Un-American Songbook', garnered features and glowing reviews from *every* US jazz magazine.
This release, with its program of greatly inventive versions of tunes by two distinctive, much-loved American rock composers has has huge cross-over potential to an audience that isn't primarily a jazz audience.

Je me fais toujours un plaisir de chroniquer les CD de ce big band américain aussi talentueux que désopilant, dirigé par le saxophoniste Ed Palermo. Cet ensemble s’est fait une solide réputation en tant que cover band de Frank Zappa - vous avouerez qu’il faut avoir les reins solides pour mener à bien ce genre de projet. J’ai fait sa connaissance en chroniquant le double Cd «Oh No ! Not Jazz !» (PR77), qui comprenait des reprises de Zappa et des compositions originales, tout cela arrangé par Ed Palermo. Depuis, j’en ai redemandé (et obtenu), avec «One Child Left Behind» (PR85), et «The Great American Songbook» (PR89). Ce nouveau projet est inhabituel dans ce sens où, aux côtés de morceaux de Frank Zappa, dont le somptueux «Peaches En Regalia» (album «Hot Rats») qui ouvre l’album, on trouve, en quasi-alternance des reprises de Todd Rundgren. Je ne connais pas Rundgren (oui, je sais, c’est une grave lacune), mais cet album m’a mis en appétit. Je ne sais pas ce qu’en pensent les connaisseurs mais il ne semble pas y avoir de différence entre les deux compositeurs (si ce n’est le déjanté de Zappa), tant les morceaux de l’un et de l’autre s’enchaînent en douceur. Quelques titres au hasard (il y en a 24 au total, plus un morceau caché) : de Rundgren : «Influenza», «Yer Past», «Breathless (Part I)», «Breathless (Part II)», «Kiddie Boy»; de Zappa : outre le premier morceau déjà cité, «Absolutely Free», «Montana», «Florentine», «Zoot Allures»... Cerise sur le gâteau : un livret de nouveau absolument délirant, contant en BD les aventures du nouveau héros masqué Zodd Zundgren (z’avez compris?). Je vous invite aussi à consulter la bio des musiciens, dont une très (hem)... talentueuse (hem)... violoniste dénommée Katie Jacoby, passionnée de Zappa, de Mozart et de Bach, et ayant joué aux côtés de Jon Anderson, John Wetton, Vernon Reid et Ian Anderson pour n’en citer que quelques-uns.
