DESCRIPTION |
| | V/A Vs rather interesting Label : Quatermass Year : 2001 Format : CD Style : Electronic / Experimental Availability : Available on request
Price : 13.50 € - BUY
| | | | Description : | Belgian sub-label Quatermass, like its parent, Sub Rosa, has always adopted a very art approach to any of their releases. This compilation, put together with Rather Interesting, is no exception. Quatermass Vs Rather Interesting introduces some exciting artists, and gets their work reshaped by some major contenders on the electronic music scene.
Pram open the ball, with a rather melodic, if still very much fucked up, reworking of Naturalist's experimental machinery #14. Reducing the song to half of its original length, Pram manage to almost turn it around, and, while maintaining the click-y noise & quirk atmosphere, give a slightly more friendly appearance. Being Enveloped, by Pentatonic Surprise, originally a rather groovy little number, reminiscent of Mark Paradinas as Jack Slazenger, when given the Pole treatment, becomes a strangely Argentinean-influenced, accordion-led dub, while Dropshadow Disease's Fototienda gets metamorphosed by Plaid, going from a perfectly formed samba-y to a track that wouldn’t look out of place on one of Plaid’s albums. The highlight of this album though has to be the Lisa Carbon input, without her Trio it has to be said. Her familiar blend of distorted electronic easy listening is perfectly at ease here. Rhumba Roland makes good use of the legendary 303, although it has rarely sounded so laidback and human. Reconstructed by Fibla, Rhumba Roland becomes more serious, slightly darker. The pace is slower, the 303 stands more in the background, and the xylophone is extracted from the rest to be delicately laid out on a sheet of silky wave of synthetic stings.
Arguably, albums like this sometimes tend to be tedious and devoid of any warmth, focusing more on who will do who a favour. However, when a label like Quatermass initiates it, the focal point is definitely the quality of the work of art achieved. Quatermass Versus Rather Interesting is not so much a remix project as an exhilarating rebuilding/redevelopment program.
