Led by composer and drummer John Hollenbeck, Claudia have quietly but firmly and definitively recast jazz into shimmering new shapes inflected by classical minimalism, new music, progressive rock and post-rock.
Celebrating 15 years of work together with the release of September, this NYC ensemble's sound continues to explore the edge without alienating the mainstream, proving that genre-defying music can be for everyone.
This album is a celebration of the month of September and the joys of composition! It pays homage to a time of year when Hollenbeck seeks the isolation and creative focus of artist residencies. In the last dozen years — often in September — he's spent invaluable time at retreats in places as far afield as Italy, New Mexico and upstate New York.
Each piece on September has a date followed by a title, and the oldest of them, '12th: Coping Song,' harks back to the nightmarish events of 9/11/2001. The experience 'has stuck with me,' writes Hollenbeck, 'so much so that I realized I cannot think or see or write down a date in September without those memories coming back to me.' It took years but Hollenbeck finally got the idea 'to write music that was somehow tied to other days in September in the hope of trying to rework and transform the traumatic residue through composition.

Na een tweetal albums met gasten is de nieuwe plaat van The Claudia Quintet van drummer/componist John Hollenbeck er gewoon weer een van de standaardbezetting. Daarin is overigens accordeonist Ted Reichmann wel vervangen door Red Wierenga, die een goede indruk maakt. De titel van deze cd, ‘September’, slaat op de maand waarin Hollenbeck zich terugtrekt om nieuwe composities te schrijven. Uitgangspunt was ditmaal dat alle stukken door de bandleden gemakkelijk uit het hoofd gespeeld moesten kunnen worden. Door de gelaagdheid die de slagwerker in zijn stukken aanbrengt, is de muziek toch complexer dan je op basis van dat gegeven zou kunnen verwachten. Wel zijn de afzonderlijke lijnen makkelijker te volgen dan in het oudere werk van Hollenbeck. Wat blijft, zijn de aan minimal music verwante ritmische ostinati die hypnotiserend werken en die soms worden uitgebouwd tot krachtige grooves. De karakteristieke klankkleuren van The Claudia Quintet (en dan vooral de combinatie klarinet-accordeon-vibrafoon) zijn als immer fascinerend, al klinken ze ditmaal wat meer als pastel dan als expressief fel, zoals op vorige platen. Het boeiendste stuk, ‘1936, Me warn you’, is opgebouwd rond een toespraak van Franklin D. Roosevelt uit dat jaar. Hollenbeck nam het ritmisch materiaal van de gesproken tekst als uitgangspunt voor de melodische lijnen en dat leidt tot een kronkelige en onvoorspelbare vorm.
