| Description : | Is it glam-rock? Bouncy post-punk à la BUSH TETRAS? Female-fronted rock in the lineage of THE BREEDERS, HOLE, or THROWING MUSES from the '90s? Yes? No? A little bit, but not just that?With Purrses, nothing is linear or easily categorized. It's all about joyfully sabotaged angles, unexpected detours, and winding roads preferred over the highway. That's truly the guiding principle behind this Franco-Belgian band based in Brussels: to transcend all stylistic clichés. To mix everything, dare everything, and deny themselves nothing. To blend the primal energy of rock, the sensual groove of soul, and the melodic influence of post-punk. It could sound like a cliché—if it weren't so genuinely open to delightful weirdness and well-managed accidents. There might be soaring synths in what began as fairly classic rock. Singing, rapping. Music to move your hips to, and music to jump around to. Haunting refrains, pop songs. Punk. In short, of all the glam spirit they partly claim, Purrses is much closer to 'Aladdin Sane' and early ROXY MUSIC than to 'Rebel Rebel' and MARC BOLAN. A certain vision of a unique, raw, adventurous, modern, and unpredictable sound. A rock mutation born of over 50 years of scenic detours, urging us away from the obvious—a band always ready for surprise. Following a first self-produced EP and a second, titled 'Wrong Tide'—recorded entirely analog and released on three independent Belgian labels (Jaune Orange, Rockerill Records, Belly Button Records)—'Reality Fantasy' is Purrses' debut album. Once again, three labels from the French-speaking Belgian indie scene are handling its release: Jaune Orange and Rockerill Records for the vinyl edition, and Cheap Satanism Records for the CD. The production, more experimental than on the EPs and blending analog and digital techniques, is helmed by LUC BERSIER (REYMOUR). n short, 2025 is shaping up to be a bright year for Purrses, a five-piece now equipped with an album unlike anything else coming out of the Belgian indie rock scene. A fine box of assorted chocolates for those who appreciate this kind of groovy post-punk approach—and a strong calling card to convince venues and festival bookers to let the band set their stage ablaze. Especially since Purrses is already on a strong roll when it comes to live shows, collecting standout performances since 2022 at venues and festivals like: Windmill Brixton (UK), Microfestival (BE), Point Éphémère (FR), Absolutely Free Festival (BE), Reflektor (BE), and Left of the Dial (NL). You only have to open a newspaper to see that 2025 won't be a good year for everyone. Except for Purrses! | |
