| Description : | Since the mid 1970s, Richard Pinhas has been a key figure in the international development of electronic rock music and he remains one of France's leading experimental musicians. He is recognized as the father of an entire musical movement in France (analogous to Tangerine Dream's role in Germany) for his pioneering work in the 1970s with his band Heldon, which fused electronics, 'diabolical guitar work' and rock to create a pioneering, aggressive music that was a precursor to industrial music and techno. All of his early recordings have been reissued by Cuneiform. Pinhas' early work has been sampled by U.N.K.L.E., Pete Namlook/Bill Laswell, and other artists, and eldonincluded in a Four Tet DJ compilation (DJ-Kicks, !K7, 2006).
Over the years, many artists in the 'noise arena' have expressed interest in his pioneering use of synthesizers and electronics in rock and contemporary music. Pinhas has likewise been intrigued by various areas of the 'noise' scene and Metal/Crystal, recorded during 'these two worst years of my life', reflects this influences strongly. On Metal/Crystal, Pinhas has collaborated with Merzbow (the originator of Japanese noise music) for the second time (their first collaboration, Keio Line, was released on Cuneiform in 2008). He also collaborates for the first time with Michigan's Wolf Eyes. In addition to these these two high profile 'noise artists', both of whom may be considered the premier artists in the 'noise music' field of their respective countries, also appearing are some of Richard's usual collaborators: Antoine Paganotti (drums), Didier Batard (bass), Patrick Gauthier (mini-Moog) (all ex members of Heldon and/or Magma), Duncan Pinhas and Jerome Schmidt (electronics). | |
